Changing Publish back to Draft in WordPress Posts

How often does it happen that you are busy writing something on a wordpress page or post and you press the blue PUBLISH button…

and then you think… Oh no! It was not yet ready to go live! What can I do? How can I change it back from being published to being a draft?
The answer is to go to the Dashboard > Posts > All Posts.

The All Posts wordpress page from the Dashboard

Then go down the list until you see the name of the Article you want to edit. In my example it is the Hello World post. When you hover the name of the post, you will see several different options.

Wordpress Quick Edit

Click on the second option to open the Quick Edit box.

On the right side of this box, under the Tags white box there is a dropdown menu next to Status. Click on it and you will see three options. Currently it shows the first option that is the current status of Published. However, if you now select the last option of Draft and then click the blue Update button at the bottom right corner of the Quick Edit box then it will go back to being a Draft!

How can I be sure that it is now a Draft and not Published?

Go back to the All Posts Page and you will see that next to the name of the post it now says the word Draft.

If you go back into your post that you accidentally published, you will once again see the blue Publish button and not the Update button that comes after you have clicked Publish.
